TWO SURVIVORS JOIN FORCES TO HELP OTHERS
This page used to contain the story of how Pier and Gaye met and formed their deep friendship in their early years. Time has passed, and the stories of ourselves seem less important than the work that we do, and the many experiences we have shared together.
Running a non-profit cancer organization is no small feat. Together, Gaye and Pier have managed to help transform the way things are done in our community, as well as help countless cancer patients, each of whom shaped our lives and our hearts. Our hearts were tested when Gaye’s Mom, Bonnie, was diagnosed with cancer and then died twenty-seven days later. Our learning curve included one-on-one work with our local Hospice providers, amazing people who do amazing things. Through our collective grief, and to include the members of Gaye’s family (husband, the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren), we learned that there can be beauty in death. Not a lesson that one would ever expect, certainly the conversations about death amongst ourselves, however, we are forever changed. Our experience brings credibility to our efforts on behalf of the cancer community. We know of what we speak. We have lived it, breathed it, felt it, and more importantly, lived THROUGH it. That is the hope of, and beauty in, life itself.
As an organization, it is the goal of Artbreakers to become a “house-hold” name in our community, to continue to do our good work and also continue to raise money for the patients we work with. Nothing is more important to us, we like to remind each other that “there are no egos at work with the Artbreakers group, rather it is all about the patient.” Thanks to our Board of Directors for their generosity of spirit and intellect. Thanks too, to the other non-profit groups of our community, the inter-connected nature of what we’ve been able to accomplish is wonderful!
